Academy of Integrated Therapies presents:

Musculoskeletal Therapy (MST)

To whom do I go and see when I have mechanical problems with my body?

Back, neck or shoulder pain, for example are obvious disruptions of your body mechanics. If the problem is persisting you will need to go and see a professional to seek some advice and treatment. Do I go and see someone that treats muscles, fascia, ligaments, energy, or joints? Well any of them may help but it makes more sense to go to someone who has an integrated knowledge of all of the body’s mechanical parts not to someone that only has a specialised knowledge in only one part.

MST an integrated body therapy

MST has been developed by Neil Skilbeck, firstly from his own experiences working as an Osteopath and Chiropractor over 40 years and from acquiring knowledge of soft tissue skills. Neil has found that when he viewed all of the mechanical tissues together they would usually tell a totally different story to that which was developed, when each one was seen separately. The power of integration is what makes all of this possible.

This integration uses well accepted skeletal evaluation procedures, the speed and efficiency of a Bowen therapy styled (cross fibre) muscle moves and the fixation solutions offered by deep tissue work on muscles, fascia, tendons and ligaments.

Muscles move bones

A fundamental understanding of physiology is that muscles are the “motors” that move the skeletal system. Even in trauma, muscle contractions move bones to their misaligned state. The skeletal system’s positioning then becomes a measurement of the success or failure of the treatment applied.

An MST practitioner (or registered AOIT Myopractor) prefers to use a series of Bowen therapy muscle moves that release lesions in the soft tissue. In these cases you will feel the practitioner’s thumbs and fingers rolling over muscle fibres in specific directions. However where long standing fixated muscle fibres are apparent, deeper techniques may be employed in order to restore normal function. A treatment takes anywhere from 15-30 minutes, allowing extra time for the first visit.

Neil a student of Tom Bowen

In the late 1970’s Neil journeyed weekly from the east side of Victoria to Geelong spending many precious hours with Tom Bowen. It is rare to find a person who has learned directly from Tom and while Neil has integrated his knowledge of skeletal diagnostics into his unique MST bodywork many of Tom’s methods are retained given authenticity to that great man’s work.

A course that is designed for you

Our courses are tailor made to suit just about anyone - whether you have other qualifications or experience in bodywork or whether you have none and are just starting at the beginning. Whether you want to make a serious career out of bodywork or you just want to learn it for interest sake or to perhaps treat your family then this course is for you.  Adults do not need any prerequisites to start our course. It is all designed to take you right from the very beginning and lead you through to your eventual awards

Our courses

Our courses are designed to ensure that the successful person is fitted with all of the body assessment and treatment skills that would be required in a professional practice. Our highest award at the moment is the Advanced Diploma of MST with an exit at Certificate IV and Diploma levels.

Nationally Recognised Training

The academy courses Cert IV in MST (accreditation No. 30836Qld) Diploma of MST (accreditation No. 30837Qld) and the Advanced Diploma of MST (accreditation No. 30844Qld) are nationally recognised. Our courses therefore receive the accepted form of recognition within the bodywork industry. Being nationally recognised means that abstudy or austudy become available to those students who are eligible for these benefits.

Credits and recognition for prior learning

Being partnered up with a registered training organisation our college is required to recognise people for any prior training or life experiences that matches up with our level of training. We will show you the easy steps that you need to take to apply for this obvious asset that reduces your overall course costs.

MST - learning its cornerstone

What is the cause and how can I measure it? This is the burning question on the mind of the the MST practitioner or AOIT Myopractor . MST training is directed at the relationships between disturbed posture, action/reaction principles, and mechanical misalignments.

Skeletal diagnostics is our major body evaluation tool as the skeleton is easy to locate, is measurable, and is an accurately representation of disturbed body mechanics.  The following are some examples of one sided skeletal misalignments that all trainee MST practitioners will learn to use as a basis for their treatment protocols.

(1) Superior shift of the innominate    (2) Anterior rotation of the innominate

(3) Superior rotation of the sacrum    (4) Pelvic girdle rotation

(5) Coccyx lateral shift                    (6) Vertebral rotations

Once the misalignment has been established then the relationship between the bones and muscles are used to locate the offending soft tissue lesion responsible. The trainee MST practitioner also learns how to establish whether or not the cause primarily rests within the muscle or is coming from a higher origin such as the nervous system.

So an MST practitioner’s training is dedicated to the following: -

(1) Accurate testing

(2) Establishing and treating causes.

(3) The pursuit of excellence in results

(4) Time efficiency

The structure of the MST course

For our course structure go to our website www.aoit.com.au

In addition to the basic hours of the course a student is expected to fulfil 500 hours of case studies and unsupervised practice on family or friends to build up their experience of working with the technique. This gives the course a total of  2,117 hours.

The course is designed to take 3 years full time or intensive part time. The course has a mixture of “hands on” workshops and online subjects.
